Sovereign

The Process

In the beginning, I intended this piece to be representative of a perspective from underwater. A view from floating in the deep space of the ocean.

As the layers began to develop, I realized I was feeling a restrain, a tension in going further with this preconceived idea. So, I decided to surrender to my usual process of reconstruction and deconstruction. This was when the shapes and marks started to make sense to me. Like uncovering an ancient tomb, I worked at unveiling what was coming through.

This whole process took me about 8 months. Going back and forth from working on the marks to stepping away and thinking out problems and the concept. In random moments throughout my day, I would find myself working out issues for this piece. I tried my best not to force anything on it. I wanted it truly take it’s time to fully develop, to come to maturity.

For the last touches, I worked on solving the problem of where to fit the small human figures. It took countless tries, putting them in different locations in the painting, different poses, and gestures. Many marks and sketches later, it was finally finished.

Towards the end of the piece, the word “Sovereign” kept coming into my mind, and I finally realized why.

The Concept

This piece means a lot to me. Created during a significant period in my life. It wasn’t until I was getting close to finishing the painting (within the last month) that I realized what it meant and how it was vital for me to hear that message during that time in my life.

There are a lot of overwhelming things that can be felt during periods in your life where you are taking significant steps towards your goal or desired life. You can feel self-doubt, fear, or complete excitement. I realized having a sacred place within yourself to dig down and touch in those overwhelming moments, to ground yourself, breathe, and take in the new experiences with a calmed and poised soul.

The painting “Sovereign” expresses the special, calming place within that can not be destroyed. It can be harder to get to sometimes, but it is always powerful to embrace. I believe everyone has this place within themselves, and sometimes it is somewhere that is shared with another soul. Each place, beautiful, majestic, and sacred.
